Tala Sabbah during her fall semester at Bard College’s campus in Annandale, 2025.
Every semester AQB students go abroad to study at universities around the globe, with the semester at Bard being a unique opportunity to experience AQB’s partner campus in person. Because AQB students receive dual degrees from Bard College and Al-Quds University, AQB students are familiar with the liberal arts curriculum found in their classes at Bard. Tala Sabbah, a Social Thought, Economy, and Public Policy major, reflects on her exchange semester at Bard:
“Participating in the study abroad program at Bard College in New York for the Fall 2025 semester was one of the most impactful experiences of my academic journey. As a hardworking and curious student who thrives in critical discussions, this opportunity allowed me to grow beyond what I thought I was capable of.
Academically, the experience honed my writing and reading skills significantly. Many of the courses required rigorous in-class essays, analytical reading of dense articles, and discussions that pushed me to think from multiple perspectives. My Political Economy of Development course was especially transformative. It expanded my horizon, introduced me to new frameworks, and ultimately guided me through writing my first 20-page research paper. Receiving an A on that project, along with the professor’s consistent support and detailed feedback, was an important milestone that will directly strengthen my senior project and, eventually, contribute to work I hope will benefit my community.
On a personal level, studying abroad helped me become more independent and confident. Living in a new environment for four months, meeting students from diverse backgrounds, and forming lifelong friendships all enriched my worldview and taught me how to adapt, communicate, and grow.
I am deeply grateful to Al-Quds Bard (AQB) for preparing me academically and intellectually for this experience. Their emphasis on critical thinking, especially within my major, Social Thought, Economy, and Public Policy, provided the foundation that allowed me to excel abroad. This experience strengthened me academically and personally, and I will carry its lessons into my future studies, work, and contributions to society.”
