Saturday, Dec 13th, 2025| Al-Quds Bard College’s Evolving Global Economy class, a course that brings together Master’s students from European Studies and American Studies, hosted Dr. Danilo Leite Dalmon, Consultant in Education Policy for the World Bank, for a special lecture on “Inequality and Growth in South America: A Historical and Contemporary Analysis.” The lecture, which was open to both Master’s and Bachelor’s students at AQB, was moderated and facilitated by Dr. Sameh Halaq, an Associate Professor of Economics at the College.
During his presentation, Dr. Dalmon addressed the historical foundations of Latin America, starting from the Inca civilization and its expansion across the South American continent. In addition, he drew on the impact of the different colonial powers from the 14th until the 18th centuries that controlled most aspects of economic life in Latin America. Later, Dr. Dalmon highlighted the period of independence from colonial rule, particularly focusing on the case of Brazil and its struggle against the Portuguese. Then, he addresses the challenges of the contemporary era, in particular commodity booms, financial crises, and recent trends.
Students attended both in person and virtually, leading great discussions on the similarities between the colonial impact on economic development in Latin America and the Levant region.
AQB’s pedagogical philosophy is eager to offer different perspectives on the disciplines studied. Therefore, it is common practice at AQB to host expert professionals who can provide more knowledge and different viewpoints on the matters in question.
