AQB Recent Molecular Genetics Alumna Publishes Her Scientific Research in a Q1 Journal

Al-Quds Bard Alumna Bisan Safi has recently published a scientific research paper in a Q1 Journal, Scientific Reports. As a first author of the research, Bisan’s paper is titled “Oral HPV Detection and Genotyping by Next-Generation Sequencing in a Healthy Palestinian Cohort: A Pilot Study.” Her research is the first in Palestine to investigate oral HPV prevalence and genotype distribution in a healthy population using a highly sensitive nested PCR and next-generation sequencing (NGS) approach.

In her research, Bisan analyzed oral samples from dental clinic patients in the West Bank and identified an HPV positivity rate of 6.7%, detecting genotypes HPV-18, HPV-31, and HPV-38. The study provides the first baseline data on oral HPV in Palestine and highlights the importance of advanced molecular tools in improving viral surveillance and public health understanding.
This work was conducted during Bisan’s senior year as part of her senior research project (SP), under the supervision of Dr. Abedelmajeed Nasereddin and Prof Mahmoud Khaled. Dr. Nasereddin provided primary supervision and was involved in the study design, conceptualization, and data analysis. 

As a Molecular Genetics alumna, Bisan completed the Senior Project (SP), a rigorous academic requirement undertaken by all AQB students. The SP immerses students in in-depth, multidisciplinary research, culminating in a substantial thesis of 60–70 pages.
