From Al-Quds Bard to the London School of Economics: A Journey of Critical Thinking, Growth, and Global Impact

Qais Ayasa | AQB Class of 2023 | Economics
I graduated from Al-Quds Bard College (AQB) in 2023 with a major in Economics through which I immersed myself in the study of economic systems and their impact on society. My academic journey was shaped by AQB’s interdisciplinary philosophy, which deepened my understanding of economic systems and their societal impact. My senior project, "Circular Economy: The Silver Bullet to The Palestinian Solid Waste Problem," advised by Dr. Sobhi Samour, allowed me to explore sustainable solutions to one of Palestine’s pressing environmental challenges.
Looking back, the most meaningful aspect of my time at AQB was the transformative environment it provided. AQB expanded my horizons in ways I could never have imagined, fostering critical thinking and intellectual curiosity. The classroom setting encouraged lively debates, well-researched papers, and the construction of compelling arguments. The college’s facilities and experienced professors created an engaging and supportive atmosphere, ensuring that every class was both informative and thought-provoking. Additionally, the engaging classroom structure allowed me to learn from the diverse perspectives and insights shared by my peers in the classroom, challenging me to think more critically and creatively.
Beyond academics, I was able to seize numerous opportunities, including attending conferences and participating in study abroad programs, all of which were made possible through the guidance and encouragement of my professors. These experiences not only enriched my academic journey but also contributed significantly to my personal growth.
The critical mindset and interdisciplinary training I gained at AQB prepared me for my Master’s in Development Management at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). My studies now focus on development and sustainability, and I continue to apply the analytical skills and innovative thinking cultivated at AQB. As I approach my graduation in December 2025, I am actively exploring opportunities to contribute to international development, leveraging my education from both AQB and LSE to drive meaningful change.
Reflecting on my journey, I am deeply grateful for the profound impact AQB had on my growth. The college not only equipped me with the tools to think critically and creatively but also instilled in me a commitment to using my education to drive meaningful change. Whether through my academic pursuits, professional endeavors, or personal aspirations, I strive to embody the spirit of AQB’s mission: to cultivate informed, thoughtful, and impactful individuals ready to tackle the challenges of the world.
