AQB Professor publishes a chapter on the evolution of women's access to higher education in the Middle East

Congratulations to Dr. Issam Khoury, Assistant Professor, Director of the Qatar Scholarship Program and Al-Quds Bard College's Director of Student Affairs Director, on the publication of his chapter on "Women and/in Higher Education in the Middle East: Past and Present" in the 'Routledge Handbook on Women in the Middle East', edited by Suad Joseph and Zeina Zaatari.

This work is a critical historical understanding of women's access to higher education in the region. The chapter provides readers a historical perspective on how higher education has evolved in the Middle East, and interrogates the normative historical understanding provided by scholars on the region (both in terms of what constitutes higher education and higher learning, and how women were given (or not given) access to this kind of education/learning). Eschewing a neo-liberal or patriarchal approach, the chapter analyzes the literature on gender and higher education from the Middle East that seeks to challenge normative social structures.
