President Leon Botstein addressed the entire Sophomore class via video conference

On Monday, February 13th, President Leon Botstein addressed the entire Sophomore class via video conference. He gave a short lecture on the opera Don Giovanni, which is included in the Second Year Seminar curriculum. The President gave the students a broad overview of the reception and audience for operas during the period. Students were surprised to learn that musical literacy was common, even amongst the less elite. Students asked questions about the ways in which the opera reflected the role of women in society at the end of the 18th century, as well as what the opera can tell us about class and gender more broadly.
