AQB Wraps up the Upraised Voices Workshops with Local Schools in Bethlehem

Upraised Voices, a project that empowers self-expression among Palestinian youth managed by Baha’ Ebdeir, Initiated in January a Workshop Series that included Debate “Spoken Voices”, managed by Tala Salem, and Creative Writing “Written Voices”, led by Shadin Nassar.

The Workshop Series was held in multiple organizations and schools in Bethlehem, including, Alrowwad Cultural and Arts Society in Aida Refugee Camp, Dar Al-Kalima School, Talitha Kumi School, Latin Patriarchate School (Beit Sahour), and it was concluded on May 12th at Latin Patriarchate School (Beit Jala).

The project targeted students from eighth grade to eleventh grade through the sessions. Spoken Voices focused on developing public speaking, critical thinking, and argumentation skills. This is all in addition to being introduced to the British Parliamentary style of debating through different non-traditional debating exercises. Written Voices introduced students to the art of writing with a focus on the tools essential for expanding their imagination and creativity. Students were introduced to the concept of descriptive writing, narrative building and script-writing through interactive writing exercises, driven by students’ willingness to learn and listen. The sessions ended with crafting and presenting short stories written by students.

Thanks to all the schools that hosted the Upraised Voices team and facilitated the implementation of the project. The next step for the Upraised Voices project is organizing a summer camp in July 2022. More details will be announced soon.
