Al-Quds Bard Organizes “Our Palestine Symposium”

Throughout the month of March 2022, under the auspices of Dr. Imad Abu Kishek, Al-Quds University President, the Humanities and Practicing Arts Division at Al-Quds Bard College (AQB) organized, “Our Palestine,” a series of events in commemoration of Land Day that honored the many shapes and forms in which Palestinians have sustained a powerful political counternarrative.

The events explored how Palestinian experiences and histories have been communicated through creative practices as diverse as oral storytelling, fine arts, photography, digital media, social media, citizen journalism, filmmaking, and literature.

The month-long symposium takes place in the context of ongoing colonial violence in Sheikh Jarrah and throughout Palestine, past and present, and builds on the momentum of the Palestinians’ determination to narrate their own lives and experiences across platforms despite ongoing attempts at silencing.

The symposium included two excursions—an eco-hike in Battir/Al-Makrour and olive-tree planting to support local farmers—as well as several student-led events, and discussions with prominent artists and journalists, including Sliman Mansour, Mai Masri, Mohammad El-Kurd, Tanya Habjouqa, WahajBaniMuflih, Noora Baker (El-Funoun), DaneesAsad, Dr. YaraHawari, Dr. Abdel Fattah Abusrour, and Ahmed Qadi.

The event was organized by AQB in cooperation with the Experimental Humanities Collaborative Network (EHCN) at Bard College in New York, under their symposium theme, “Reclaiming the Narrative”.
